What is FERPA?
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 is a federal law that protects the privacy and confidentiality of personally identifiable information contained within student education records. It also ensures the students' right to inspect, review and challenge the accuracy of information contained.
FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 OR attends a post secondary education institution.
Parents who wish to make inquiries regarding their student(s) must arrange for their student to sign a FERPA release form in the Registrar's Office.
What is Directory Information?
The College may release information without the students' consent where the information is classified as "directory information".
The following information has been designated as directory information by the college: name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, major area of interest, dates of attendance, year of attendance, ID or other photographic images.
Students who do not wish for directory information to be released without their consent should visit the Registrar's Office.
Privacy
Official student records are the property of the College and are maintained by the Registrar's Office, Business Office and other offices on campus. St. Catharine College complies with FERPA's confidentiality protections and adheres to procedures dealing with directory information recommended by the American Association of Collegiate Registrar's and Admissions Officers.
