Department of English and Foreign Languages
Igniting the power of the spoken and written word in the hearts and minds of every student.
St. Catharine College’s Department of English and Foreign Languages’ dedicated faculty promotes the correct use, development, power, effectiveness and beauty of language, primarily the English language, in both its written and spoken forms. We also recognize the need of promoting other languages in our ever expanding multiculturally diverse society. St. Catharine College Department of English and Foreign Languages encourages SCC students to learn Spanish for employment in health care, teaching, criminal justice, and various businesses. Our department also teaches various Literature and Humanities courses that encompass a wide range of time, place and ideas connecting the student to the thoughts and feelings of acclaimed writers from Homer to Stephen King. Our students develop their ability to creatively and critically assess written works and write their own works in our Composition, Creative Writing and Journalism courses.
Our English and Foreign Language Department also develops the students’ ability to speak in front of groups primarily through our Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communications Courses. We also encourage this in our classes through group and/or Powerpoint Presentations. We will soon offer Dramatic Performance courses in connection with the Fine Arts Department, The SCC Drama Club and our newly acquired theatre in Lebanon, Kentucky.
SCC’s Department of English and Foreign Languages develops a student’s ability to speak with poise and confidence; to read deeply and analytically; to write clearly, comprehensively and creatively; and to employ and master the ever-expanding audio, visual and computer technologies.
